Project Overview

News apps live or die on time-to-first-headline and how well the feed reads on a small screen. This build focuses on both: a fast, cached feed that renders instantly on open, personalisation from followed categories and reading behaviour, and a swipeable short-video format for people who scan rather than read. On the publishing side, an editorial CMS handles drafting, scheduling, breaking-news pushes, and category placement, so the newsroom controls the front page without a deploy.

What the Product Does

Personalised feed

Ranked feed driven by followed categories, sources, and reading history, with a clean chronological fallback for people who want the raw wire.

Categories, sources, and search

Section browsing, source following, keyword search, and topic tracking so a running story stays in one thread.

Breaking-news alerts

Segmented push notifications for breaking stories and followed topics, with per-category opt-out so alerts stay welcome.

Short-form video

A vertical, swipeable video feed for headline-length stories, autoplaying as the reader scrolls.

Offline reading and bookmarks

Articles cached for offline reading on a commute, plus bookmarks and a read-later list synced across devices.

Editorial CMS

Draft, review, schedule, and publish, with media handling, category placement, and front-page curation controlled by the newsroom.

Who Uses It, and How

Reader

  • Open to a feed that is already loaded and relevant.
  • Follow categories and sources, and mute the rest.
  • Save stories for offline reading and swipe through short video.

Editor

  • Draft, schedule, and publish from the CMS.
  • Push a breaking alert to the right audience segment.
  • Curate the front page and category placement live.

Why It Matters

Cached-first rendering makes the app feel instant, which drives session frequency.

Segmented alerts lift return visits without training readers to mute notifications.

Short-form video captures the audience that will not read a full article.

The newsroom controls placement and timing without engineering involvement.
